john’s story

Around 5 years ago I had just moved into my own house after experiencing long-term homelessness and health issues as well as a lack of confidence and anxiety issues. Having the stability of having a secure tenancy was a major help in making me feel secure. During this period I worked for a major charity as a volunteer in one of their charity music shops. As music was and still is a huge passion of mine this job at the time was the perfect fit for me. But after working there for 15 years I needed a fresh challenge. Then Covid came on the scene and any future plans were halted
I had always wanted to try DJing and share my love of music with a wider audience. But I wasn’t aware of anyone who was teaching this skill at the time in Scotland and from what I found in the U.K. going private the costs were restrictive and put any plans I had yet again on hold
Just after the pandemic finally finished I was made aware of Robbie and was asked if I would be interested in learning in how to dj. At last ! This has been the opportunity that I had been looking for. So in 2022 I began my classes with Turn the Tables. Robbie taught me all the fundamentals of how to operate a controller , how to fade songs in and how, the art of mixing songs together and how to build my own bespoke playlists using software that ran with the controller that I was using
Also at this time I undertook a small collage course which helped me gain my confidence and got me interested in media studies. I then undertook a course in multi media production which included podcasting, photography and filming. I then progressed and passed a course in media studies that got me enough qualifications to apply for university were I am now currently studying for a ba in journalism
Also after all my lessons with Robbie I initially did events with him until he though I was ready to go solo
At the time of writing I have done events for the Prince William’s Royal Foundation , Diageo, who are multinational drinks company, Street Soccer and Social Bite charities who help people with homeless, substance abuse and poverty issues . I have also done some local events on my own were Robbie has booked the events on my behalf
Meeting Robbie has been a major factor in my life in the last few years . Without his support and knowledge I’m not really sure what road my life would have ended on.
